Unified Metropolitan Transport Agency
No.535 SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR:
Will the MINISTER OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government plans to expedite setting up of Unified Metropolitan Transport Agency (UMTA) in all the States to ensure better traffic management, planning and upgradation; and
(b) if so, what would be the role and powers of UMTA?
ANSWER
MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT
(SHRI SAUGATA ROY)
(a): The Government has formulated the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP),
2006 which envisages setting up of Unified Metropolitan Transport Agency (UMTA)
in all million plus cities.
(b): Unified Metropolitan Transport Agency (UMTA) is envisaged to facilitate
Coordinated planning and implementation of urban transport programmes and
Projects and an integrated management of urban transport system.
