Modernising the SAI Centres

Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:
(a) the steps taken to modernise the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centers across India including Bengaluru and the State of Karnataka; and
(b) the amount of funds allocated and utilized for the purposes of strengthening and encouraging sportspersons from backward regions in Karnataka?

(a) Sports Authority of India (SAI) has upgraded 23 centres as National Centres of Excellence (NCoEs) across the country, including Bengaluru in Karnataka, in 14 priority sports disciplines. Details of specific steps taken in this regard are given in Annexure – I.
(b) Sports is a State Subject and the primary responsibility of development of sports rests with the State Governments and the National Sports Federations (NSFs) which are responsible for governance of individual sports disciplines. The Central Government, through the sports development schemes implemented by it and organizations functioning under its aegis, complements and supplements the efforts of the State Governments and NSFs in this regard. However, funds are not allocated under any of sports promotional schemes implemented by the Ministry or its organisations for development of sports in States/UTs on the basis of backwardness of any region. Funds are released to eligible entities as per norms of the respective Schemes. Details of funds released/utilised during the last three years under major sports promotional schemes of the Ministry or its organisations for development of Sports in the State of Karnataka are as under :

More than 200 skilled manpower have been approved for operating NCOEs.
