Professor Attacked in Kerala by Extremist Outfits

Will the Minister of HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government has taken cognizance of the 4 July, 2010 incident where Prof. T. J. Joseph of Newman College, Thodupuzha, Kerala was attacked and his hand was chopped off by miscreants linked to suspected extremist outfits in the State;

(b) if so, the actions taken to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice; and

(c) the details of the status of investigations which were initiated into the series of abductions and murders, e.g. of the Islamic Scholar Moulavi Abdul Hassan Chekannur in July, 2003, eight fishermen of Marad in Kozhikode on 2 May, 2003 and so on?

STATEMENT IN -REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF THE RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2625 FOR 18.8.2010

(a) & (b): As per information received from Government of Kerala, a case has been registered as Crime No. 704/2010 under various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Explosives Substance Act at Muvattupuzha Police Station in connection with the chopping of palm of Prof. T .J. Josph, Professor, Newman College, Thodupuzha. The case is being investigated by a Special Team of Kerala Police headed by Superintendent of Police. The Special team has conducted several raids at suspected premises. The Police have arrested 15 accused in the case. Efforts are on to arrest remaining accused.

(c): Information is being collected and will be laid on the Table of the House.
