CENTRAL ASSISTANCE FOR UPGRADATION OF
Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Karnataka

 

873. SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR:
Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

  1. whether the Central Government has provided assistance for upgradation of Government medical colleges and Government hospitals in Karnataka;
  2. if so, the details thereof for the last three years, year-wise and college and hospital-wise; and
  3. if not, the reasons therefor?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE

(a) to (c): Central Government has taken up upgradation of Government Medical College, Bangalore under Phase-I of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) with an investment of Rs.100 Crore. The upgradation project is implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare directly. Civil work has been completed. It is also proposed to upgrade Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science, Bellary in the Phase-III of PMSSY. Planning Commission has accorded 'in principle' approval for the proposal.
The Central Government also provides financial assistance for strengthening of hospitals at District level, new construction/renovation and setting up of Community Health Centres (CHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Sub Health Centres and Sub-Centres under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and also for the project for strengthening of trauma care facilities in Government hospitals. Insofar as State of Karnataka is concerned, an expenditure of Rs.7.28 Crore has been made in 2007-08; Rs.23.33 Crore in 2008-09 and Rs.64.73 Crore in 2009-10 for strengthening of district hospitals and setting up of CHCs, PHCs, SHCs, SCs etc. In addition, for establishment of trauma care centres in the hospitals at Karnataka, an amount of Rs.4.85 Crore in 2007-08 and Rs.0.65 Crore in 2009-10 has been sanctioned.
