AMENDING THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS ACT, 1960
47. SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR:
Will the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government is considering to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960 and make it more stringent to prevent the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals, especially after an elephant was suspected to have consumed a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers which exploded in its mouth in the Silent Valley forest; and
(b) if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED IN REPLY OF RAJYA SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.47 PART (a) to (b) ON AMENDING THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS ACT, 1960
(a) & (b) The need for amending the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 by introducing more stringent penalties has been recognized by the Government. The draft amendment worked out includes increasing monetary penalties and punishment provisions.
