Completion of Strategic Border Roads
* 21. SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR:
Will the MINISTER of DEFENCE be pleased to state:-
(a) Whether it is a fact that almost one – fourth of India’s strategic border roads remain unfinished;
(b) If so, the reasons therefor; and
(c) By when they are likely to be completed?

(a) Out of 73 roads identified as strategic border roads, 15 have been completed, 39 are scheduled for completion by 2013 and the remaining 19 by 2016.
(b) The main reasons for slow progress are as under:
(i) Delay in Forest / Wildlife clearance.
(ii) Hard rock stretches
(iii) Limited working season
(iv) Inadequate air efforts to mobilize resource
(c) As replied in Para (a) above.
