Adequate Night Shelters for Homeless in Delhi

211. SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR:
Will the Minister of HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) the number of homeless persons in Delhi, who died due to severe cold conditions during this winter (2009·10) for want of adequate night shelters In the Union Captial;

(b) the estimated number of homeless in Delhi who required night shelter arrangements with the capacity of such shelter made available by various Govemment agencies in the capital with details thereof; and
(c) what steps are proposed by the Central Government and UT administration to ensure adequate provision in this behalf in future?

(a): Delhi Police has reported death of following number of homeless persons due to severe cold during the year 2009-10 (upto 15.2.2010):-

(b) & (c): No survey of homeless persons in Delhi has been conducted. However, MuniCipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is running and managing 64 Night Shelters across the city and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) runs a temporary Night Shelter at Sarojlnl Nagar, New Delhi every year from 15th February with all the basic amenities like blankets, dar.ies and security arrangements etc. These Night Shelters run by MCD & NDMC can accommodate 10,150 persons approximately
