Disbursement of Credit to Private and Public Sector Undertakings.


 23. SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR

Will the Minister of FINANCE be pleased to state;

(a)   the total gross new credit disbursed during 2008-09 and 2009-10 by various banks to private and public sector undertakings (PSUs) separately, year-wise and sector-wise; and

(b)   how much of the credit to the private sector was linked to the Government or PSUs risk/contracts?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO RAJYA SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.23 FOR ANSWER ON
27TH JULY, 2010 REGARDING DISBURSEMENT OF CREDIT TO PRIVATE AND
PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKINGS BY SHRI RAJEEV CHANDRASEKHAR.

(a): Information on total gross new credit disbursed by banks to private and public sector undertakings year-wise and sector-wise is not being maintained. However, according to Basic Statistical Returns (BSR) compiled by the RBI, information is available on the total amount of bank credit outstanding to various sectors including public and private sector. Based on the latest BSR, the total outstanding credit to Public Sector Corporations, both Financial and Non-financial, was Rs.3.32 lakh crore as on March 2009. The total credit outstanding to Private Corporate Sector as on March 2009 was Rs.10.77 lakh crore. Between March 2008 and March 2009 the growth in outstanding credit was Rs.1.01 lakh crore to Public Sector Corporations and Rs.2.17 lakh crores to Private Corporate Sector. Details of outstanding credit,

sector wise for 2008 and 2009 is given at Annexure-I.

(b): The data reporting system of the RBI does not capture credit to the private sector linked to government or PSU risk/contracts.
